Data Analyst Student Assistant
The business
Driversnote is a product-centric and profitable SaaS company in the heart of Copenhagen. We proudly help over 3 million users across more than 50 countries log their mileage. No one enjoys the hassle of mileage documentation. We automate and simplify this tedious task, and make our customer’s work-life easier while saving them both time and money.
We are 40 people working closely together on design, mobile and web development, marketing, support, sales and customer success.
At Driversnote, you will enjoy the benefits of working at a company that has a clear product-market fit and is fully owned and operated by the founder team. We're profitable and have quadrupled our ARR over the last three years. Our scale will allow you to operate in a truly data-driven fashion, and our independence ensures that we always align our decisions with the best interests of our customers and employees.
The product
Driversnote’s main experience is a highly rated freemium app, to a large extent spread through word of mouth. We offer automatic mileage tracking based on the phone's geo location and in addition, we offer a piece of hardware known as an iBeacon to ensure precision tracking, when you enter your car.
The mobile app is backed by a substantial backend, and at driversnote.com we offer a fully fledged web application with advanced trip management, team management and workflows for teams.
We have a B2C-like relationship with many of our users, but we are gradually moving more and more into traditional B2B space with all that this entails of further product enhancements.
The way we work
We use a product development process known as Shape Up, where a few key people take the role as shapers and define projects that can be designed, implemented and released within 6 weeks, known as cycles. For each 6 week cycle, we form new cross-functional teams with designers, developers, marketeers and customer supporters on them, and we let the teams focus exclusively on finishing their projects within the cycle. Each 6 week cycle is followed by a 2 week cool-down period, where we fix bugs, execute functional projects, evaluate how we did and plan the next cycle.
We like to say that our unfair advantage is that we care more than our competitors, and our users and customers tend to agree when they review our app, respond to NPS surveys and rate our support. We have a generous budget set aside for each employee to learn and develop, and we do a lot of fun stuff together.
The opportunity
Data plays a central role in how Driversnote builds product, runs experiments, supports customers, and makes decisions across the company. With millions of users and a mature data stack built on BigQuery and Looker Studio, most teams already rely on data in their daily work. At the same time, many people need fast, practical help turning questions into reliable numbers.
As a Data Analyst Student Assistant, you will work closely with our full-time data analyst and play a central role in helping the company turn questions into reliable insights. The role is hands-on and varied, with a strong focus on building solid analytical judgement, developing fluency in BigQuery and Looker Studio, and learning how data supports real product and business decisions at scale.
The position is part-time and designed to fit alongside your studies, with flexibility around exams and deadlines. It is an opportunity to gain deep experience working with real product, marketing and operational data in a profitable SaaS company, while building strong fundamentals in analytics, SQL and data tooling.
The role
You will primarily work in a reactive, service-oriented capacity, handling incoming data requests and supporting others in getting reliable answers from our data. Typical responsibilities include:
- Handling ad-hoc data requests from product, marketing, support, operations and management, often with limited initial specification.
- Turning loosely defined questions into concrete reusable BigQuery columns and Looker Studio reports.
- Helping colleagues validate numbers, understand discrepancies, and sanity-check results before decisions are made.
- Supporting ongoing experiments by pulling relevant data, running basic analyses, and flagging assumptions or limitations.
- Using basic experimental and quasi-experimental methods to assess causal effects of product changes
- Maintaining and extending tables, views or scheduled queries under guidance from our senior analyst.
- Making updates to existing Looker Studio reports, and creating new reports based on templates and existing reports.
- Assisting with debugging broken or confusing reports and helping keep datasets tidy, understandable and reasonably performant.
- Being mindful of BigQuery performance and cost when querying large datasets.
- Pointing colleagues to existing reports or tools to help them become more self-sufficient, and documenting recurring requests when useful.
You must
- Be currently enrolled in a relevant degree such as data science, engineering, computer science, statistics, mathematics or a related field, and have completed at least the first year or equivalent coursework.
- Have hands-on experience with SQL and a SQL-based analytics platform, ideally BigQuery or something similar.
- Understand basic data warehousing and analytics concepts, including working with tables, views, joins, aggregations and window functions.
- Be structured, detail-oriented and comfortable working with incomplete or loosely defined questions.
- Be fluent in written and spoken English, with the ability to explain data and assumptions clearly to colleagues in other fields.
It would be nice if you
- Have worked with Looker Studio, Google Data Studio or another BI or reporting tool.
- Have some familiarity with product, marketing or operational data from a SaaS or digital product environment.
- Have basic experience with data pipelines, scheduled queries or maintaining analytics tables.
- Are interested in learning light programming beyond SQL to support your analytical work.
- Have previous experience from a tech company, startup or student job involving data or analytics.
- Have basic experience with a statistical modelling language (Python, R..) and their relevant packages.
What we believe in
Vision & mission: We work to eliminate work-life hassles to let people focus on what matters. Today, that means removing the pain and trivial work of handling mileage, while providing peace of mind that nothing is forgotten and all rules are followed.
Product-led: We focus our work on the end-user and optimize for bottom-up adoption. People’s use of our product is what leads to our growth. We primarily sell through our product and as self-service. We invest in customer success instead of outbound sales. Our marketing is focused on people with a need, leading them to the product.
Lean & data-driven: We try to get a deep understanding of the problems we’re solving. But we also acknowledge that we often can’t predict the outcome of our work. So we believe in an experiment-based approach to product development with short build-measure-learn cycles. For this reason, we also don’t believe in detailed plans that span quarters or even years.
Long-term & compounding: We invest in things that will have a continuous return and compound. For example, we prefer a 1% improvement in activation rate over a flashy €100k deal. We’re self-funded, so we don’t stress about the next funding round and take the time to go into depth with our work.
